Around the world instances of riots and mass protest have skyrocketed, part of an increasing trend for the past two decades. We find ourselves in an era of mass uprisings, fueled by popular frustrations with compounding crises of deep inequality, injustice, and state violence. Yet the ways we talk about these rebellions in the US is largely shaped by a “violence-vs-nonviolence” discourse that no longer fits the reality on the ground. This talk presents updated research on riots and protests to help disentangle reality from misconception.
